Citrus production has for the majoriy of the years been focused on Florida crop.
But in the late 1800's that was all beginning to change. Navel orange trees were brought from Brazil and were planted
in Riverside, California. California began producing enough crop to become Florida's biggest competition.
In 1892, ten acres of Florence Ranch in
the Chase Nursery Company of Riverside was being sold for a thousand dollars an acre. The land was a mile and a half away
from the packing house. The Citrus industry had taken off by this time. By 1900, two million boxes of oranges and 24,000
boxes of lemons were being exported.
