The Great Freeze of 1913 & the Effect on the Citrus Crop

Future Prevention

Scientists giving growers advice for future frost...

Beginning in late January, scientist began advising growers on how to handle damaged fruit, as well as how to prevent future damage. Professor Weber of the Pathological Lab work in the south, claimed that “early pruning was not the best”. Also that “growers should not fertilize damage groves, because the weak trees will go through shock.”
Another scientist by the name of Ames suggested that citrus trees wear “nighties” when frost is detected in the next season. The tent-like object would consists of heat lamps, thermometers, and vents. The biggest fear would be that the trees would become too hot. In the long run, the tents would be cheaper and less time consuming than smudging.
